Washington, D.C.—On October 19, 2010, Dr. Robert I. Lin, President of the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists, invoked Article XVII of the CBNS by-laws for the first time to bestow on Constitutional and Administrative Law attorney Jonathan W. Emord the title “Honorary Nutrition Specialist.”  Under the by-laws, the title may be bestowed on individuals “who have made significant contributions to the science and/or practice of nutrition or who have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of nutrition care.”

CBNS acted to award Emord the title following his seventh straight victory over the Food and Drug Administration in federal court in the First Amendment decision ANH v. Sebelius, declaring FDA censorship of selenium-cancer risk reduction claims unconstitutional.  Emord is the first recipient of the honorary title.  CBNS President Dr. Lin made the following remarks upon informing Emord of the award:

In recognition of your leadership in nutrition and law and in appreciation for your outstanding achievements in advancing the free speech right of expressing truthful nutritional information, the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists has conferred upon you the title Honorary Nutrition Specialist (HNS) with all the rights and privileges thereto pertaining.

A year ago the CBNS elected Emord its first non-scientist board member.  After becoming a board member, Emord was then nominated and elected to be Vice Chair of the organization.

Upon receiving the HNS title, Emord remarked, “I am humbled and honored by this award and am pleased to do my part in advancing the complementary causes of liberty and nutrition science.”
